As a new Commander, the most important section is the mission board. Right now, most of them won't be of much to use, but you can sell star chart data, buy and sell in the commodity market, buy new ships and add-ons, and so on. In your starting port, you'll find a lot of services available to you.
You'll be in the space equivalent of a sneeze with little in the way of teeth to bare.
